Oregon Ducks 2009 Season

The 2009 Oregon ducks football team started the year out with a new head coach by the name of Chip Kelly. The Ducks started out ranked 16 in the AP poll and 14 in the coaches poll. Their first game was an away game against Boise state, the Ducks lost 9-18. At the end of the game Blount punched Bronco DE Byron Hout in the chin after Hout had taunted him in front of Boise State head coach Chris Petersen. Blount then went after fans in the front row of the south end zone before being restrained and escorted off the field by security, police, and Oregon coaches. The next day, Oregon suspended Blount for the rest of the season, ending his career. However, in October, Kelly announced that Blount could return as early as November provided he meets certain academic and behavioral benchmarks. The Ducks evened their 2009 record at 1–1 with a thrilling 38–36 win over Purdue in their first visit to Eugene. Utah brought the Nation's longest winning streak of 16 into Autzen Stadium this year. The ducks snapped that streak by winning 31-24. After giving up a field goal in the first quarter, the Ducks scored 36 points in the second and third quarters to take a key win, 42–3, over the Golden Bears in a Pac-10 conference game. The Ducks hosted Washington State who has not won at Autzen since 2003 and they lost to the Ducks once again 52-6. A solid performance in the first half was enough to put away the UCLA Bruins 24-10. The Ducks were headed to Washington to play the huskies and Washington have not beat the Ducks there since 2003. The Ducks came out with a win beating the Huskies 43-19. The tenth ranked Ducks handed the Trojans their worst lost since 1997 and Pete Carroll the worst loss in his tenure at USC. Oregon's undefeated conference season came to an end at Stanford, 51–42. Both teams have five victories in the Pac-10 championship race. Oregon has won four straight over the Sun Devils by an average of 23.8ppg, including a win over them this season at Autzen 44-21. With only a couple of games left, this year's game against Arizona means everything as both teams control their own destiny to go to the Rose Bowl if they win out. The Ducks won in a thrilling 2 overtime game 44-41. The Ducks crushed the Beavers Rose Bowl aspirations for the second year in a row and managed to secure their own with a 37-33 home victory over the Beavers at Autzen Stadium. Oregon returns to the Rose Bowl for the fifth time and first since the 1994 season. The Oregon Ducks lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl in 2010, 26–17. Although the Ducks had a disappointing beginning and end to the season, they still were Pac-10 champions finishing 11 in both polls and a 10-3 record.
